“As plankton, dinoflagellates are essential sources of nutrition for many other organisms. In some cases, they are consumed directly. Others serve as producers of nutrition in a more indirect way. For instance, photosynthetic dinoflagellates called zooxanthellae use sunlight to fix inorganic carbon. In this symbiotic relationship, these protists provide nutrients for coral polyps (Figure 5.3.1.3 ) that house them, giving corals a boost of energy to secrete a calcium carbonate skeleton. In turn, the corals provide the protist with a protected environment and the compounds needed for photosynthesis. This type of symbiotic relationship is important in nutrient-poor environments. Without dinoflagellate symbionts, corals lose algal pigments in a process called coral bleaching, and they eventually die. This explains why reef-building corals do not reside in waters deeper than 20 meters: insufficient light reaches those depths for dinoflagellates to photosynthesize.“

The red that you’re seeing is the very same phenomena that happens in red tide, when the protists become harmful.

omg, I just got my new tank raised radial file fish and it has quickly become my absolute favorite. Now that I know I don't have to be terrified it's about to die when it sleeps I find i can be charmed by its curious nature, its jewel like eyes, and its unique behavior. It was my first juvenile fish so I had some struggles with feeding but he (she? they.) seem to be doing just fine now. 1 1/2 cm long but the King Triton of my heart.

I have been in the hobby almost 60 years. I used both UV sterilizers and protein skimmers to improve the health of aquariums. Do you need these, No! But both add to the health of the tank. Generally speaking, as you see more subjective views of protein skimmers vs scientific/objective view of protein skimmers, most protein skimmers are fairly similar. They all do the same thing. Variable pumps flows that after awhile you never touch again. DC pumps vs AC. You do not need a super expensive protein skimmer. After a few years, you may want to buy a cheaper skimmer more often. Just look at all the water that bypasses that skimmer while it is processing a slice of water at a time. It is just taking sampling’s. Water changes are still king

Why don't you stick to captive bread animals rather than supporting the extraction of the Hawai`i reef wildlife that exists on nearshore reefs using practices that have never gone through the environmental review process -- a very common and necessary step that is required by law? I realize your business is about selling stuff related to aquarium animals so you need animals, but really, can't you open up your eyes, please? Your longterm success depends on places like Hawai`i coming up with meaningful rules, limits or at least compliance with the law. Look at the news, your best suppliers are criminals.
